Dr. Schoenborn and her team recently published a paper titled “The effect of conflicting versus consistent messaging on older women’s support for breast cancer screening cessation” in the journal Patient Education and Counseling. They found that messaging about stopping screening can significantly increase older women’s support for screening cessation, with low rates of negative reactions, even if there are competing messages about continuing screening. This and their earlier work suggest that messaging is a promising strategy to reduce over-screening in older women. Congratulations to the team that includes Drs. Boyd, Xue in geriatrics, Dr. Pollack in the SPH, Dr. Schonberg at Harvard and Drs. Gollust and Nagler at University of Minnesota.
