Dr. Peter Abadir will become the chair of the M.D. Admissions Committee when the current chair, Allan Gelber, steps down at the end of June. Dr. Abadir has been a member of the M.D. Admissions Committee since 2019, and he brings a great deal of experience, expertise and passion for medical student education to this position.

An associate professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology, with an appointment in the Whiting School of Engineering, Dr. Abadir is active in research, patient care and education, and is the associate director of the Johns Hopkins postdoctoral Translational Aging Research Training Program.

Dr. Abadir received his medical degree from Tripoli University in Libya. He completed his residency training and chief residency in family medicine at the University of Kentucky before coming to Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in geriatric medicine. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2009, becoming a leader in all aspects of the tripartite mission. A well-recognized expert in research on the role of the angiotensin type 2 receptor in the frailty phenotype, Dr. Abadir is a research mentor and adviser to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows. In 2017, he received the prestigious Frederick L. Brancati Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Department of Medicine. He is also an attending physician on the inpatient medical service at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he interacts regularly with medical students and internal medicine residents — and obtains special satisfaction and joy when he works with students and residents he interviewed as a member of the M.D. Admissions Committee.
